Aerial view of Central Inverness, looking W.

DP 343216

Description Aerial view of Central Inverness, looking W.

Date 31/5/2014

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 343216

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This general view of Inverness, looking towards Dunain Hill includes a large number of sites which are recorded on Canmore and the HER. Inverness High School moved to its present site in 1937 and can be seen at the centre of the photo. Eastgate Centre and the Railway are at bottom right and the Castle can just be identified on its mound above the river. The first phase of the Eastgate Centre was opened in 1983, followed by an extension opened in 2003 built on the site of the Falcon Foundry and the auction mart. Though there is a record of a castle in Inverness going back to the C12, the present building dates from the C19 and very little relates to earlier structures. It functions as the Sheriff Court (2020). Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
