Scope and Content Inverness Castle is on the site of a motte and bailey dating from William the Lion's 1179 campaign. The modern castle 1836-43 houses the sheriff court. Beside was the site of the Ft George 18c barracks. Beyond is Ness Bridge which replaced the old stone bridge washed away in 1849. On the far bank of the river is Ness Bank and a series of hotels.
