Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Scope and Content This is a close view of the area of Cromarty around the harbour, with the Rope and Hemp Works to the right of the harbour and the Gaelic Chapel and Graveyard at centre right of picture. Cromarty became a Royal Burgh in the C13 and many of the buildings are of historical significance. The Ropeworks were built in 1773-76 and converted into housing in 1984. The harbour was begun in 1785 and adapted for military use in 1914 with the building of the Admiralty Pier. The slipway at left of picture is used by the ferry from Nigg. The ferry crossing between Cromarty and Nigg is well documented going back to Robert the Bruce. The lighthouse was built in 1846 and the Gaelic Chapel was built in 1783 but is now roofless. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
