Scope and Content This is a general view of Cromarty with the harbour and slipway at bottom left. The Rope and Hemp Works are to the right of the harbour and Cromarty House is at the centre of the photo. The South Sutor is towards top left. Cromarty became a Royal Burgh in the C13 and many of the buildings are of historical significance. The Rope Works were built in 1773-76 and converted into housing in 1984. The harbour was begun in 1785 and adapted for military use in 1914 with the building of the Admiralty Pier. The lighthouse was built in 1846. The ferry from Nigg uses the slipway to the east of the harbour. The ferry crossing between Cromarty and Nigg is well documented going back to Robert the Bruce. Cromarty House was built in 1772. Reed's Field, to the left of Cromarty House, was the focus of an excavation from 2013-2016 as part of the Cromarty Mediaeval Burgh Project. The South Sutor has many military structures, dating from both WW1 and WW2. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
