Description Aerial view of north-east section of Invergordon, looking N.

Date 26/9/2010

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 342228

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This view of Invergordon focuses on the north-east section of the town and shows the extent of the RND fuel depot. The east pier is at the bottom of the picture. The distillery buildings are to the north-east of the tanks. Invergordon Distillery was founded in 1959 and Ben Wyvis Distillery was built in 1965. Officers' housing can be seen on the shore to the right of the tanks and at far right is the hospital which started life as the Military Hospital, became the County Hospital and was opened as the Invergordon County Community Hospital in 2005. The green rectangle to the north of the distillery is the site of the aluminium smelter, built in the 1960s and closed in 1981. Invergordon Mains is at centre left and the Free Church can just be identified to the left of the tank depot. A naval dockyard was established at Invergordon at the beginning of the C20, taking advantage of the deep water channel and the town has many sites associated with naval activity during both world wars. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
