Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 342175

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This view focuses on the development around the Leys Roundabout (centre) and shows at bottom right Culduthel Mains Gardens, above which is Holm Farm Road, still under construction. Inverness Royal Academy is to the left of the roundabout and above it is the white roof of the indoor bowling centre with the Gaelic Primary School behind. The Inverness Royal Academy was founded in 1792 and operated from Academy Street till 1895 when it moved to Midmills. In 1977 it moved to Culduthel. In 1992 a Gaelic primary school was established as part of the Central Primary School in Inverness and in 2007 pupils were transferred to this building. The Fairways development can just be seen at the roundabout on the middle left. Excavation in advance of the development to right of picture uncovered a Bronze Age landscape with pits, a ring cairn, round houses and evidence of metal working. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
