Scope and Content This is a view of Fort George which includes the major features of a military fort e.g. barrack blocks, parade square, regimental chapel and sports ground. Off the western side in the Moray Firth 5 wrecks are recorded and there is a fish trap at the southern side of the point. Forth George was constructed following the '45 rebellion to replace Inverness Castle which had been seriously damaged but by the time it was completed in 1769 it's purpose had been overtaken by military developments and by the Napoleonic Wars, it was doubted whether the defences could withstand a modern artillery attack. It is used at present as an army barracks, but is also a major tourist attraction with a regimental museum. Its future is uncertain following Ministry of Defence finance reviews. In the distance is Ardersier with its houses, churches, Cromal Mount (motte) and monastic settlement at Dalyards. There are fish traps along the southern coast of the point and the road between Fort George and Ardersier is the old military road.
