Scope and Content This is a view of the ruined Skelbo Castle overlooking Loch Fleet. It's a motte and bailey construction, the original castle dating to the C12. It was slighted by Bruce in the Wars of Independence and rebuilt in stone in the C14. Originally in the hands of the De Moravia family, it passed to the Sutherlands of Skelbo but was forfeited following the '15 rebellion, after which it was acquired by the Gordon Earls of Sutherland. Also in the photo is Skelbo Castle cottage on the site of the railway station. The line of the track can be seen running from top right to bottom left. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
