Description General oblique aerial view of the Medieval Burgh of Cromarty and the Cromarty Firth, looking SW.

Date 18/5/2008

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number DP 341327

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This view shows the Cromarty Firth stretching away into the distance with Ben Wyvis in the top right hand corner - on the left just in front of it is Newhall/Balblair Point and on the right the town of Invergordon with its harbour. In the foreground is the ancient medieval burgh of Cromarty (Canmore ID 14479) the centre of which has moved westwards over the years towards its harbour (Canmore ID 14473) and the point from where a ferry (slipway Canmore ID 288295) has linked the town to Nigg on the north side of the Firth. A ferry at this location has been in existence for centuries and was used by pilgrims en route to Tain in the 16th century. Cromarty House (Canmore ID 105508) and the site of the old castle (Canmore ID 14464) are in the wooded area in the bottom left-hand corner. A multitude of buildings and sites of archaeological interest are located in the town of Cromarty, of note is Hugh Millers Cottage, East Church, the Courthouse and the 18th century Rope Works now converted into apartments. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
