Scope and Content Luftwaffe aerial photograph of Kirkwall Aerodrome, Orkney Islands At the time this photograph was taken the airfield was under construction, as noted by the heading ('Flugplatz Im Bau'). Three runways are distinctly visible, though no buildings have been identified. Originally known as Grimsetter, Kirkwall Aerodrome became an RAF fighter station in 1940, acting as a satellite airfield to nearby Skeabrae for a while. In 1943, the airfield became a Royal Naval Air Station and was renamed HMS Robin. At the end of the war, it became RAF property once more, and with the end of hostilities became Kirkwall Airport, and remains in service as such today. Taken during aerial reconnaissance by the Luftwaffe in June 1941, this photograph shows Kirkwall Aerodrome. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
