Scope and Content Recorded on the mounted print: 'Shire: Fife. Place: Pittenweem. Building: 3, 4, 6, The Gyles. Photographer: F.B. Date: July 1963'. 3, 4 and 6 The Gyles, Pittenweem, Fife Pittenweem became a burgh of barony dependent on its Augustinian Priory in the 15th century, and a royal burgh in 1541. Appearing in records in 1228, its port harboured a thriving fishing fleet, and was home to merchants trading with the Low Countries. The Gyles, dating from the 17th to 18th century, stands on the headland at the east end of the harbour. This photograph shows the group of buildings before 1962 when it was restored for The National Trust for Scotland by Wheeler and Sprosan. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
