Scope and Content View of Beechcroft, No 17 Clarendon Place, Stirling Beechcroft was designed c.1860 by architects Francis & William Mackison. It is a large asymmetrical Italianate villa with four-stage tower and finely carved stone details. It is built of smooth ashlar masonry with carved wooden bargeboards and deep eaves. This shows the main entrance front with the tower highlighting the front door below. Steps lead up to the doorway, framed by carved consoles which support a balustraded balcony above. A modern wood and smoked-glass extension can be seen (right). This large villa would have been the home of a wealthy 19th-century family whose grand home expressed their wealth and taste. Grand houses were needed for entertaining and housing the large families of Victorian times, and the servants who attended them. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
