SC 1967679

Description Aerial view of Skibo Castle and Loch Ospidale, East Sutherland, looking NNW.

Date 8/2006

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1967679

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A view of Skibo Castle with Loch Ospidale to its left, at a time when the tide is filling the shallow inlet of Poll na Caorach from the Dornoch Firth to the S. The loch is artificial, built following Andrew Carnegie's purchase of the land, by constructing a tidal barrier across the Allt Garbh. Skibo Castle is on the site of the residence of the medieval Bishops of Dornoch, although the current building and its associated offices and gardens are almost entirely a late 19th and early 20th century construction. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
