Aerial view of Loch Ruthven, E of Loch Ness, under snow, looking NE.

SC 1967646

Description Aerial view of Loch Ruthven, E of Loch Ness, under snow, looking NE.

Date 3/2005

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1967646

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A light covering of snow highlights at least four, possibly five or six, rectangular almost square enclosures, as previously recorded in 1993. Associated with them are a number or rectangular buildings on at least two alignments. At least four structures are visible and there may be another group of buildings at circa NH 60287 27158. They are not shown on earlier OS survey maps, though three of the enclosures appear at various zoom levels on the current OS mapping. They appear to be part of the extensive post-medieval township of Ruthven (see also Canmore 78160/ 78162 and Highland Council HER MHG 3912/ 3913). Also visible on this image are the crannog in Loch Ruthven and the enclosure on Tom Buidhe (the triangular promontory, upper centre) possibly a medieval ditched settlement site (now much disturbed by rabbit burrows and molehills). Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
