Craig Phadrig Hospital opened in 1970 for the care of "mentally handicapped" patients. However, changing social mores meant that increasingly these patients were cared for in the community, and the hospital was closed in 2000. The care of acute psychiatric conditions in Inverness is now housed within the newly constructed New Craigs Hospital on the same site.
