Description Aerial view of Fort Augustus Abbey, Fort Augustus, looking N.

Date 21/8/1999

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1944447

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The River Oich is just visible at the top, with the Caledonian Canal below, above the Abbey. In the centre is Fort Augustus, completed in 1749 as a military fort. Only the NE and lower course of the W bastion remains. It was eventually absorbed into a Benedictine Monastery, built 1876-1998 in a grand Gothic style. Part of the Abbey became a boys' school in 1878 until it was finally closed in 1993. The building is now (2020) divided into flats and apartments, constituting the exclusive Highland Club. At the bottom of the image, the River Tarff enters Loch Ness. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
