Scope and Content Scottish National Buildings Record. Written on verso of the mounted print: 'Shire: Dunbartonshire. Place: Helensburgh. Building: Cairndhu Hotel. Photographer: G.N. Date: March 1965. Dining room - chimneypiece’. View of fireplace in dining room, Cairndhu, Rhu Road Lower, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Cairndhu was built in 1871 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). He also completed additions to the service wing in 1902. This two-storeyed house with basement was built in the French Renaissance style from grey sandstone with polished cream ashlar dressings. The interior features stained glass and decorative work by Daniel Cottier (1838-91). This shows the impressive dining room fireplace with its overmantel mirror framed by pilasters. The painted ceiling can be seen reflected in the mirror. The fireplace is composed of panels, some of which contain painted tiles. Two plaster corbels (supporting brackets) with sculpted figures support the beams above. The 19th-century taste for elaborate decoration is evident in this richly furnished room. Strongly modelled sculptures and carved woodwork combine with the intricate hand-paintwork of the tiles and ceiling in a display of fine craftsmanship and artistry.
