Scope and Content Scottish National Buildings Record. Written on verso of the mounted print: 'Shire: Dunbartonshire. Place: Helensburgh. Building: Cairndhu Hotel. Photographer: G.N. Date: March 1965. Lodge from South West'. View from west of Cairndhu Lodge, Cairndhu, Rhu Road Lower, Helensburgh, Argyll & Bute Cairndhu Lodge was built in 1871 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916). It was built as the gate lodge for Cairndhu, a large French Renaissance-style villa with interior decoration by Daniel Cottier (1838-91). The L-plan lodge is built in Scots Renaissance style from Cream sandstone. This shows the lodge and the gate posts, with their banded pyramids with ball finials resting on stone balls on four joined columns. The lodge itself has an arched doorway with corbelled, crenellated parapet above. An advanced bay (left) has ball finials and a window with a carved decoration above. Below this projects a bow with a conical roof. The lodge is often very ornately constructed as it was the first structure the visitor would encounter on arrival at the house. The fine stonework together with the contrasting curved section and angular features reflects the complex composition of the main house. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
