Scope and Content Henge and stone circle known as The Stones of Stenness, Orkney The Stones of Stenness consist of ditch and bank surrounding the remains of a stone circle. Several stones were destroyed in the 19th century, but thanks to restoration work done in the early 20th century 4 of the 12 stones still remain. This is a of the square setting found in the centre of the stone circle. It is formed from 4 slabs. Between this and the entrance to the N was a series of postholes suggesting some kind of wooden structure. No other remains of this exist. When the site was excavated the bones of cattle sheep and dog were found in the ditch along with a human finger bone. Fragments of Grooved Ware pottery were also found.
