Scope and Content Drawing showing the exposed side of a cross-shaft fragment built into Wamphray church, Dumfries and Galloway A fragment of a finely carved cross-shaft has been reused as a lintel over the west door of Wamphray church. Local tradition suggests the stone came from the site of a nearby chapel at Barneygill. Although only a small portion of the stone's edge is visible, the decoration can be reconstructed. A pattern of three interlaced loops with long glides seems to repeat itself along the edge of the shaft. The carvings date to around the 9th century, a period when the Angles of Northumbria settled across lowland Scotland and Cumbria. Along with the settlers came monasteries and churches, where finely carved free-standing crosses such as this were produced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
