Scope and Content Cromarty became a Royal Burgh in the C13 and many of the buildings are of historical significance. The Ropeworks, at upper centre, were built in 1773-76 and converted into housing in 1984. The harbour was begun in 1785 and adapted for military use in 1914 with the building of the Admiralty Pier. The ferry from Nigg uses the slipway to the east of the harbour. The lighthouse was built in 1846. The Gaelic Chapel, at lower left, was built in 1783 but is now roofless.
