Description Aerial view of the Ness of Portnaculter, Dornoch Firth, looking W.

Date 2002

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1909813

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This shows the N end of the Ness of Portnaculture and the pier for the S side of the Meikle ferry crossing of the Dornoch Firth, from Ross-shire to Sutherland. This was the setting for the notorious 1810 ferry disaster, when 90 persons lost their lives as an overloaded ferry boat overturned. The pier is early 19th century and of coursed-rubble construction. To the left is the ferry keeper's cottage. Beside this is a WW2 accommodation hut, scheduled for demolition in 2008. There are another five in a group between the houses. There is an ice house beside the last house to the right. In the foreground clearly visible is an enclosure and insubstantial remains of a rectangular building. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
