An oblique aerial view of Loch Dola, Lairg, Sutherland, looking NE.

SC 1906825

Description An oblique aerial view of Loch Dola, Lairg, Sutherland, looking NE.

Date 2000

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1906825

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content A wide view of the loch and surrounding area. On the largest island in the loch are the possible remains of a rectangular building mentioned by Sir Robert Gordon in the 16th century. Across the whole area there are numerous remains of both prehistoric and early modern settlements and field systems. Below the loch, in the largest area of relatively green grass on the left of the road, are early modern enclosures and the footings of buildings together with clearance cairns of indeterminate date. Similar cairns, prehistoric hut circles, and the footings of other early modern buildings and enclosures are spread across the extensive green area to the right of the loch, the latter marked as the small settlement of Doler on Roy's map. In a mound beside the modern farm, bottom right, possible orthostates and Neolithic pottery have been found. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
