Scope and Content Standing stones at Nether Largie, Argyll and Bute About 250m SE of Temple Wood lies a carefully arranged group of standing stones, roughly aligned NE-SW. At either end of the arrangement stand a pair of monoliths. Between these are two settings of four and five stones respectively. This tall, cup-and-ring marked monolith stands at the centre of the setting of five stones. Across the SW face are over 40 cupmarks, including a keyhole-shaped marking on the left hand edge. At 2.8m high, this stone towers over the surrounding monoliths. The Kilmartin valley is particularly rich in standing stones and stone circles. Their purpose remains uncertain though much debated. Some sites undoubtedly held religious or ceremonial significance, others perhaps acted as territorial or route markers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
