Description Oblique aerial view of probable homestead feature at S end of The Ord, near Lairg, Sutherland, looking SW.

Date 1998

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1896319

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The area in the image is at the S end of The Ord, an extensive Scheduled Monument comprising chambered cairns, cairns, settlements and field systems, including numerous hut circles. A prominent circular feature (top left), of Bronze Age date, was initially identified as a henge or robbed bell cairn, now thought to be a homestead defended by a ditch. Hollows in rough grazing at upper left (not readily visible in image) are thought to be impact craters from live firing during WW2. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
