Oblique aerial view of The Ord, near Lairg, Sutherland, looking SE.

SC 1896313

Description Oblique aerial view of The Ord, near Lairg, Sutherland, looking SE.

Date 1998

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1896313

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content This image provides a good general view of the Ord, an extensive Scheduled Monument comprising chambered cairns, cairns, settlements and field systems, including numerous hut circles. Distance and overlying vegetation combine to obscure visibility of the hut circles in this view. Features which can be distinguished include clearance cairns and rig and furrow; and in the far distance a large circular homestead (top edge, left of centre). A distinctive mound beyond the road near left centre edge may be the burnt mound which is recorded. Chambered cairns are recorded near the telecoms mast (white spot at upper centre). The area near the centre of the image was the scene of the 16th-C Conflict of Gruids, in which Alexander, Master of Sutherland defeated John MacKay of Strathnaver. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
