Date 1997

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Scope and Content This view shows Tiree Airfield (Canmore ID 92820). The island of Tiree is low lying and relatively fertile. It has been settled for millennia and has many sites of archaeological interest from prehistoric cup marked rocks to Iron Age duns, Early Christian sites and more modern sites. The harbour and buildings at Hynish (Canmore ID 21415 and 21416) upper left, was the base from where in 1837-43, Alan Stevenson, constructed the lighthouse of Skerryvore 11 miles to the SW. The principal centre for the community of Tiree and the terminal for the ferry from the mainland is Scarinish just out of the view bottom left corner. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
