Scope and Content This is a view of South Kessock & Merkinch which lie between the River Ness and the Caledonian Canal. The pier at South Kessock can be seen on the left and a ferry operated between South Kessock and North Kessock on the Black Isle for at least 400 years. It ceased operating with the opening of the Kessock Bridge, at top L, in 1982. The railway line to the north and west curves round in the middle of the picture and crosses the canal by a swing bridge. The sea lock of the canal is at bottom of picture. The open area behind the houses at Merkinch is the Merkinch Nature Reserve, opened in 2009. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
