Aerial view of Skye Bridge, Isle of Skye, looking NW.

SC 1867003

Description Aerial view of Skye Bridge, Isle of Skye, looking NW.

Date 1996

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1867003

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The Skye Bridge was opened in 1995 and operated as a toll bridge until the tolls were scrapped in 2005. Kyle of Lochalsh on the right hand side of this view was developed in 1897 when it became the terminus of the West Highland Railway and the Kyle-Kyleakin crossing became the main ferry access to Skye. The ferry ceased operating when the bridge was built. Kyleakin is the main gateway to Skye but the village planned in the early C19 was never realised. Below the slipway on the left is Caisteal Maol, the ruined C15 stronghold of the MacKinnons of Skye. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
