Scope and Content Cromarty became a Royal Burgh in the C13 and many of the buildings are of historical significance. The Ropeworks, which can be seen to the right of the harbour, were built in 1773-76 and converted into housing in 1984. The harbour was begun in 1785 and adapted for military use in 1914 with the building of the Admiralty Pier. Cromarty House, at centre right, was built in 1772 to replace the mediaeval Castle. Reed's Field, to the left of Cromarty House, was the focus of an excavation from 2013-2016 as part of the Cromarty Mediaeval Burgh Project and C12 remains of the original village were uncovered. There are wartime remains on both the South Sutor (upper right) and the North Sutor (top left). Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
