Oblique aerial view of Cleadale, Isle of Eigg, looking N.

SC 1865033

Description Oblique aerial view of Cleadale, Isle of Eigg, looking N.

Date 1994

Collection Papers of James Sloan Bone, landscape historian, Inverness, Highland, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 1865033

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content The image shows the crofting township of Cleadale beneath the steep slopes Beinn Bhuidhe. In 1810, this was the first township on Eigg to be divided into enclosed lots for the population engaged in harvesting kelp. The following features lie within the area of the image, but are not readily visible in the photograph. Tobar Challuim Chille, a spring beside the right-hand branch of the road, is associated with St. Columba. There is more than one lime kiln in the area, an example being beside the left-hand branch of the road. A limestone quarry is situated just out of shot beyond bottom edge of image. The middle ground of the photo includes the remains of the pre-improvement townships of Howlin, and (beyond the end of the right-hand branch of the road) Five Pennies (Cuig Peighinnean) or Tolain. Further out again are a number of hut circles. Title and Scope & Content contributed by North of Scotland Archaeological Society (2021).
