Scope and Content Cooperage and cask yard from north-west, North British Distillery, Wheatfield Road, Edinburgh The North British Distillery was established by a group of independent whisky blenders in 1885 to produce a reliable supply of grain whisky for their blends. Production began in 1887, and the first Saladin maltings in Scotland were installed here in 1948. The site was renovated in 1992, and continues to create whisky for many famous blends. This shows the cooperage, a special building for the repair and reconstruction of casks. The single-storeyed building is harled, and has sliding double doors for easy access. Casks are stacked ready for attention in the yard. Malt and grain whisky must be aged in oak casks for a legal minimum of three years. These casks may have previously contained either Oloroso sherry or American Bourbon. Maturation in these wooden casks gives the whisky its flavour and finished appearance, and takes place in cool, earth-floored bonded warehouses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
