Scope and Content Fort at Burnswark, Dumfries and Galloway Burnswark Hill is the location of several known archaeological sites including an early prehistoric burial cairn and cist; hillfort; and Roman practice siege works. The defences of the fort can be clearly seen in this aerial photograph. With a single rampart on the north and a double rampart on the south-east, three entrances give access to the fort. Within the Roman earthworks (top right) lead sling-bolts and stone balls from Roman siege engines were found, suggesting that the Romans used the earthworks as a training ground. These finds are held within the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
