Scope and Content Main platform, Dingwall Railway Station, Dingwall, Highlands Dingwall, despite being the county town of Ross and Cromarty, remained small with little trade until its harbour was built in 1815-17. Connection to the rail network in 1862 fuelled further expansion. The town-centre was redeveloped in 1963. A cast iron structure supports the glazed awning over the main platform of Dingwall Railway Station, built to designs by Murdoch Patterson in 1886. By the mid 19th century, architects commonly used cast-iron structures and decorations. This was because Scotland had become a major iron producer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
