Scope and Content View from south-east Cairndhu, a two-storeyed asymmetrical villa, was built in 1871 to designs by architect William Leiper (1839-1916), the service wing was extended in 1902. The interior was decorated by artist Daniel Cottier (1838-91), and includes Japanese-style painted ceilings and fine stained glass panels. It was converted to a hotel in 1956, and a residential home in 1984. This is a view of the house from the gardens. In the 19th century visitors would arrive by carriage in front of the columned entrance porch (right). The house features a curved tower (left) with circular stair-tower linking it to the rest of the façade with its gableted dormers and tall chimney-stacks. William Leiper began working in Helensburgh in 1870 after moving there from Glasgow. He worked on many fine buildings, ecclesiastical, commercial and domestic, but is best remembered for his remarkable Venetian façade for Templeton's carpet factory, built in 1889 in Glasgow.
