Scope and Content Kitchen, Castle Fraser, Aberdeenshire, from south-west This photograph shows the kitchen on the ground floor of the Michael Tower. This part of the castle is thought to have been built around 1576 by Michael Fraser (d.1588), although it has been suggested that this may, in fact, be the earliest part of the castle. The north wall of the room is dominated by the arch of the large fireplace, with the remains of the bread oven set into it. In 1631, the 'laigh biggins' were built to the north of the castle, which included a new kitchen. The older kitchen can now be visited as part of the tour of the castle, and is furnished with kitchen implements including a 'crood mill', for the making of 'crowdie' cheese, and a range of cauldron-like pots. Castle Fraser is situated 26km west of Aberdeen, surrounded by fields and woodland. It dates from the 15th century, when the lands of Muchall and Stoneywood were granted by King James II (1437-60) to Andrew Fraser (d.1475). The castle was known as Muchall-in-Mar until 1695. Over the centuries, generations of the Fraser family made additions to the original tower-house, creating the fine Baronial castle that is now in the care of The National Trust for Scotland, and open to the public.
