Scope and Content Written on the back of the mounted print: ‘Shire: Fife. Place: Falkland. Building: Cameron House’. Photographer: ‘JP’ Date: ‘9.5.58’ Rear, Cameron House, High Street, Falkland, Fife Cameron House was built in the early 17th century. Its name commemorates Richard Cameron, a Covenanting preacher killed at the Battle of Airds Moss in 1680, who is said to have been born in the house. Unlike the front, the rear of the Cameron House (right) has not been covered by plaster so that the rubble masonry is visible. Originally it would probably have been covered by a layer of harling. Most Scottish masonry from the Middle Ages to the 18th century was harled - covered with rough-cast cement to protect it from the weather. This would probably have been painted using locally available pigments. The results could be quite colourful. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
