Description Oblique aerial view.

Date 1991

Collection RCAHMS Aerial Photography

Catalogue Number SC 1760691

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of B 46966

Scope and Content Aerial view showing fort and settlements at Peat Hill, Dumfries and Galloway Situated on a terrace high above the Dryfe Water are the earthworks of two prehistoric settlements. The earthworks at the bottom of this aerial view represent at least two different periods of occupation, an earlier fort partly reoccupied by a later settlement. Above, earthworks enclose a natural hollow though little occupation evidence survives within. Whilst appearing impressive, many forts probably were constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders, often occupying prominent positions in the landscape.
