Scope and Content Aerial view of the motte-and-bailey castle at Wamphray Place, Dumfries and Galloway Remains of a motte-and-bailey stand on a promontory situated on the westernmost edge of Wamphray Glen. Though eroded, the typical pudding bowl-shaped motte is still recognisable in this aerial view. Overlying the site of the bailey, which lies to the south and occupies the promontory, are footings of a number of late medieval buildings. The lands of Wamphray were held by the Corrie family until 1357, passing to Roger Kirkpatrick around this date. By 1476 Wamphray was in the hands of the Johnstone family who retained the estate until 1746, when it was purchased by the Earl of Hopetoun. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
