Scope and Content Stone circle known as the Twelve Apostles at Holywood, Dumfries and Galloway This stone circle at Holywood is one of the largest in Scotland. This fact is slightly disguised as the monument in spread over two enclose fields. Eleven of the twelve original stones remain. This is an aerial view of the stone circle. Five of the stones are still firmly placed in the ground. The highest, to the NE, is 1.9 m. The largest stone is 3.2 m and lies exposed to the SW. In 1837 another monument, of 9 stones, was reported nearby. It had been broken up and used as building material. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
