Scope and Content Aerial view of Soutra Aisle, Scottish Borders Soutra Aisle lies c.13km north-west of Lauder. The only standing evidence of a former hospice for travellers, run by Augustinian monks and founded in 1164 by Malcolm IV, its lands and revenues were appropriated by Trinity College in Edinburgh in 1460-2. This aerial view shows the aisle (right) lying next to the road. The hospital was in use up to 1583-4, but was ruinous by the 17th century, and demolished in 1850. A datestone of 1686 indicates when the aisle became the burial place of the Pringle family. To the left of the aisle is an area being excavated by archaeologists who are carrying out research into medieval illnesses and medicines using the DNA of bones and blood found in the hospital waste pit.
