Scope and Content Roman fort at Elginhaugh, Midlothian Elginhaugh, near Dalkeith, was first discovered by aerial photography in 1979, and fully excavated in 1986. It lies on raised ground overlooking the river North Esk. The fort is also built on the Roman road known as Dere Street, which led north from York. Elginhaugh is one of the few examples of a completely excavated fort in the Roman Empire. This aerial view, taken during the excavations, shows the characteristic internal grid-pattern of a Roman fort defined by the outlines of buildings and roads. Excavation of the site showed that the fort was built during the governorship of Julius Agricola (78-84 AD). Following the Roman victory at Mons Graupius, the fort was deliberately demolished and abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
