Scope and Content Fort at Mumrills, Falkirk This Roman fort is at Mumrills. Built on a high plateau, it had several phases of occupation. It may have been destroyed and rebuilt twice before it was finally abandoned. There is an annexe to the W and the Antonine Wall to the N. This is an aerial view of the site. Crop-marks show the location of the fort, and some of its buildings, in the lower part of the image. Below is the annexe, now mostly under modern buildings. Above and to the left of the fort is the line of the Wall. The site was excavated in 1923-8 by Macdonald, and again in 1958-60 with an emergency excavation conducted by the RCAHMS. The fort may have been occupied by a cavalry regiment, the Ala I Tungrorum, and the infantry regiment, the Cohors II Thracum. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
