Scope and Content Fort at Westerwood, North Lanarkshire This Roman fort is at Westerwood. It was built on an N-facing slope above the River Kelvin. The fort was one of the stations along the Antonine Wall, which abuts the N side of the fort itself. This is an aerial view of the site. The fort can be seen as a series of crop marks above and to the right of the modern buildings. The fort consisted of a rampart and two ditches. There was an entrance in the S (top) side. The fort was first excavated in 1932 by Sir George Macdonald. It established the layout of the fort, and Macdonald also tentatively identified the Military Way and an annexe to the S of the fort. Further work done in 1974-5 found no traces of these. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
