Scope and Content Aerial view of the fort at Dunsinane Hill, Perth and Kinross Occupying the summit and lower slopes of Dunsinane Hill, this fort commands an extensive view across the lower end of Strathmore. The association with Macbeth led to a series of antiquarian excavations in the 19th century. Crowning the summit of the hill is this massively defended citadel. Its defences comprise an inner wall, up to 9m thick, and two outer ramparts. The lower plateau immediately beyond was part of a large enclosure joined to the fort. Today the interior of the fort is disfigured by excavations conducted by James Playfair in 1799 and William Nairne in 1854. Nairne discovered a two-compartment chamber containing human bones, interpreted as an earlier cairn, on the summit of the hill. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
