Scope and Content Aerial view of a fermtoun at Easter Bleaton, Perth and Kinross Situated some 400m east of Easter Bleaton farmstead are the extensive remains of a well-preserved fermtoun. The fermtoun lies on a west-facing terrace above the floor of Glenshee. This aerial view shows part of the fermtoun at Easter Bleaton. It comprised buildings of varying sizes, kilns, and enclosures, all reduced to their wall footings. The layout suggests that Easter Bleaton consisted of at least eight separate farmsteads. Prior to the mid-18th century, most tenant farmers and their families lived in fermtouns, a loose collection of dwellings, byres and barns surrounded by fields. The better land was used for arable crops, the poorer used for the communal grazing of stock. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
