Scope and Content Settlement remains and field enclosures at Skipisdale, Mingulay, Western Isles The island of Mingulay, meaning 'Big Isle' in Old Norse, lies at the southern end of the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides). Skipisdale is located on the south coast of the island and takes its name from a combination of the Old Norse words for 'ship' and 'valley'. The reference to 'ship' indicates that there was a landing place on the coast. This shows the ruins of a settlement (centre) of prehistoric and later date. There are the remains of a 9.5m diameter roundhouse built upon a terraced mound together with remnants of later and possibly contemporary cultivation. The stacks of Geirum Beag (small) and Geirum Mor (large) can also be seen. Of the five main islands south of Barra, Mingulay was once the most heavily populated. A census of 1881, records that 150 people lived on the island. In 1912 the island was finally abandoned. Mingulay was bequeathed to the National Trust for Scotland by Miss J M Fawcett in 2000.
