Scope and Content Old Dornie from west, Highland Old Dornie is a sheltered bay on the west coast of Scotland, which looks out towards the Summer Isles and Loch an Alltain Duibh. The bay is protected by a storm bar upon which have been found the remains of a pre-improvement community. The bay is used today as safe anchorage for pleasure craft. This shows the bay filled with numerous small boats. These are served by a two jetties (bottom). The land at the top of the bay includes walled enclosures probably associated with the farm nearby. The remains of six buildings, including a possible kelp kiln, have been found on the sheltered side of the storm bar (centre left). The loch (top right) is Loch Camas an Fheidh, and part of Isle Ristol can be seen (bottom left). The Summer Isles take their name from their use as summer grazing lands used by coastal communities of crofters. The community who lived at Old Dornie may have used Isle Ristol in this way. The landscape around the bay also bears the ridges left by lazy bed cultivation, showing how the farmers worked the land in narrow strips of improved soil. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
