Scope and Content Aerial view of the village of Bowmore, Islay, Argyll and Bute The planned village of Bowmore stands on the east shore of Loch Indaal. It was established in 1768 by Daniel Campbell as part of his reorganisation of his estate, and involved the removal of the village of Kilarrow from the vicinity of Islay House. In 1793 the village comprised 110 houses and had a population of 500, which had risen to 850 by 1891. The village was established to house farm workers and labourers. A distillery was also founded in the village in 1779, and is still in operation today. The village has a grid-iron street plan, with a broad main street running north-south intersected by streets running east-west. As the whisky distillery developed from the mid-19th century, the village expanded to provide housing for incoming workers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
