Scope and Content Aerial view of Scar Farm, Sanday, Orkney Islands Scar Farm is on the coast of the Island of Sanday which forms part of the Orkney Islands. Sanday lies some 38.6km north-east of the town of Kirkwall on mainland Orkney. Low-lying and almost treeless, Sanday enjoys fertile soils and a favourable climate for local agriculture. This shows Scar farm buildings close to the seashore. The symmetrical layout of the fields is typical of the landscape created after agricultural improvement began in Scotland at the end of the 18th century. Improvement only came to Orkney in the mid-19th century with the collapse of the kelp industry. Kelp is a type of seaweed, harvested on Orkney, as on much of the Scottish coast, from the 1720s. It was mainly used in the manufacture of glass. Profits from kelp made a significant contribution to Orkney's economy until the advent of a cheaper alternative led to the collapse the market in the early 19th century.
